Woe to you who believe your God to be merely man or woman.
Woe to you who believe in hard things but not soft,
Or in kindness but not might.
For whom will you be strong?
In what ways can you love?
For steel is sharpened by steel
So the hearth is kept full by its bounty.
And the heart is softened
So strength serves justice and not cruelty.
You who are not kind
— Your wailing will become the wind, your might will waste to air.
Your war will become an irksome breeze in the arms of lovers,
Your idols of blood will crust over and heal,
And the Lord will reign peacefully.
You who hate strength
— Your healing will be hateful, your love will be death.
Your peace will destroy things great and good,
You will forget God’s commandments,
And the Lord will remind you terribly.
As seeds sweeten and turn to grapes, so too does he become she
And give us our fruits.
As grapes sour and turn to wine, so too does she become he
and give us our passions.
Grapes are to be enjoyed; wine is to be imbibed.
Deny one of yourself in your freedom, but do not deny one of God.
Who are you who is so whole,
Who will demand this sacrifice of your God?
Which of you has seen the grapes from seedling to wine?
No one but the Lord has created of themselves and seen of themselves.
All the Lord is great and good
And only the Lord is great and good.
Do not be as the hand that severs the arm;
You tear your worth at its root.
Do not be as the eyes that spite the ears;
The blind have more sense than the seeing man who does not listen.
Do not be as the one who prays so she is loved by man rather than by the Lord;
The disbeliever is more pious than the devout woman who forgets her God.
Do not be as the Israelites on Mount Sinai;
A calf is infirm and gold is without feeling.
The Lord is great and the Lord is good.
Lord forgive us our hard hearts
Lord forgive us our impotent hands
Woe to you who have mutilated your God!
Who have denied your God half of life.
Woe to you who have forgotten the name of your God,
for you have forgotten the name of your counterpart.
Be as the Lord and protect your flock.
Be as the Lord and love your neighbor.
By the Lord’s protection and love, you too will remember your counterpart.
